The Kissing Fish

CONCEPT:

The kissing fish was a board I was introduced to while surfing a perfect head high day at cloudbreak with John Roseman in 2019. Said you just have to always keep it turning from side to side and it will go like a bat atta hell.

I have been on that board ever since. It’s a great California board. Goes really well down the line and can hold a rail on a long drawn out cutback better than any board I have ever ridden. The flat deck gives great volume and float while the thinned out tail with plenty of rocker gives the board responsiveness when you want to tighten up your turns and get more jiggy.

The quad set up is unique. Front fins have nice splay for maneuvering while the back set is tucked up close but fins sit very strait up creating drive and hold through turns. Sorta best of both worlds. Great for a wide range of abilities.

I call this board my secret weapon.

The Flying Fish

CONCEPT:

Tim Bessell began his career shaping fishes in the early 70's at Sunset Surfboards located in Encinitas CA. The Flying Fish is one of the staples of his career.

The Fish surfboard, created by Steve Lis in 1967, remains one of the most iconic and versatile designs in surfing. Originally crafted for kneeboarding in San Diego’s fast, hollow waves, the Fish is easily recognized by its compact shape, wide outline, thick down rails, flat rocker, and distinctive split-tail with twin keel fins.

Although initially praised for its performance in small, weaker waves, its speed and maneuverability quickly gained popularity among stand-up surfers. David Nuuhiwa's renowned twin-fins from the 1970s are perhaps the most notable adaptation of the design, cementing its legacy.

Today, the term "fish" has evolved to describe a variety of high-volume shortboards featuring a pointed nose and fish-like tail, even if they differ in specific design details. Are you considering adding one to your quiver, or are you already a fan of riding a Fish?

The Barracuda

CONCEPT:

The Barracuda is a Hybrid Fish Design that takes performance to the next level. Featuring the innovative hydro rail, it provides added lift and drive to maximize speed and maneuverability, making it an ideal choice for surfers looking for a versatile and high-performing board. This model stands out in my quiver as my personal favorite, with a size range that starts at 6'8 and extends to 9'6. My go-to size has always been a 7'2. The effortless paddling makes catching waves almost guaranteed, offering a smooth and confident experience in a variety of conditions.

Constructed with Carbon Epoxy and a Polyurethane foam core, the Barracuda is built for durability, responsiveness, and optimal performance. Bessell’s choice of materials ensures a balance of lightweight strength and flexibility, allowing the board to excel in both small, playful surf and bigger, more challenging waves.

As Tim describes, the Barracuda paddles like a longboard but surfs like a shortboard, making it a perfect fit for the intermediate to advanced surfer. Whether you’re looking to improve your wave count or push your limits on steeper, faster waves, this board offers the versatility and performance to elevate your sessions. It’s a true all-rounder, combining the best elements of traditional fish designs with modern innovations.
